Organic Best For Zurich Kids

Organic Best For Zurich Kids

Food labels can be confusing for Zurich parents wanting to buy the most nutritious food possible for their families. The word ‘natural’ can convey wholesomeness–but that’s not always the case.

Look for more specific food labels like ‘organic’ which means, in fruits and vegetables, that the food is grown without pesticides. Some evidence suggests that organic fruits and vegetables contain higher amounts of vitamin C and other nutrients than non-organic.

The organic label on poultry, meat, and dairy means that no antibiotics, hormones, or pesticides are given to the animals, and the livestock are given only organic feed. ‘Organic’ livestock also must have access to the outdoors, and disease is prevented through natural methods.

‘Natural’ isn’t a term regulated by the FDA, so products with this label may still contain additives. Instead, look for the USDA organic badge, a guarantee that there is no high fructose corn syrup, partially hydrogenated oil, genetically modified ingredients, or artificial colors, flavors, or sweeteners.

Zurich children and infants are the most vulnerable to hormone and pesticide exposure due to their less-developed immune systems and their still-developing brains and bodies. Zurich parents who provide organic food support their child’s health now and in the future.

SpongeBob Doesn’t Care About Your Zurich Child’s Health

SpongeBob Doesn't Care About Your Zurich Child's Health

National and local Zurich food advertisers can sabotage your Zurich child’s health. Food manufacturers, like most Zurich corporations, are motivated by profit, not by what’s best for Zurich kids.

Their tools are deceptive language, cartoon characters, celebrities, and false promises of popularity. Zurich parents can help youth better handle the constant media barrage by teaching them:

The components of a healthy diet
The implied messages and false promises of Zurich food ads
Nutritional balance and moderation
How to read and understand Zurich food labels
How excessive TV watching and internet viewing can affect health

If you encounter a local Zurich food ad that is deceptive, contact the Zurich Better Business Bureau. To complain about national ads, send a letter to the Children’s Advertising Review Unit, Council of Better Business Bureaus, 845 Third Ave, New York, NY 10022.

Nothing will change until Zurich families unite to fight deceptive advertising aimed at Zurich children. For more information on children’s nutrition in Zurich, call me today.

Zurich Mega-Meals: Don’t Eat The Whole Thing!

Zurich Mega-Meals: Don't Eat The Whole Thing!

It’s no wonder that many Zurich children and teens struggle with weight issues. What is considered a ‘normal’ food portion has been getting bigger and bigger. In some cases, as with gargantuan Zurich fast food soft drinks and Zurich Costco muffins-on-steroids, it is absolutely ridiculous. And extremely unhealthy.

The findings from three large national surveys demonstrate:

‘Hamburgers have expanded by 23 percent; a plate of Mexican food is 27 percent bigger; soft drinks have increased in size by 52 percent, snacks, whether they be potato chips, pretzels or crackers, are 60 percent larger.’1

Zurich restaurants and Zurich food and beverage manufacturers are not the only ones sabotaging our children. Portion sizes have increased in homes, also.

If Zurich parents are going to help their children maintain a healthy weight, learning proper portion sizes is critical. If we don’t know the size of a healthy portion, how can we teach our children?

The Mayo Clinic website has a great slide show that helps Zurich parents and other children’s health advocates understand what ’4 ounces’ or a ‘half cup’ actually looks like. You can see it here: http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/portion-control/NU00267

Can Texting Help Zurich Kids Eat Healthier?

Can Texting Help Zurich Kids Eat Healthier?

Hello Zurich parents. I ran across an article in Women’s Day magazine with some creative suggestions for helping children lose weight and develop sensible eating habits. (‘Is My Child Too Heavy,’ Women’s Day, June 2011, p. 102)

If you are one of the many Zurich parents who is worried about your child’s weight, you might find these helpful:

  1. Have kids help you prepare meals. If they prepare healthy dishes, they are more likely to eat them.
  2. Encourage volunteering. ‘Boredom often goes hand-in-hand with overeating, volunteering keeps them busy and boosts self-esteem.’
  3. Limit eating to the kitchen table. Mindlessly snacking while watching TV or playing video games can add a significant amount of calories.
  4. Text a food journal. Handy texters (doesn’t that include every kid over the age of 12?) can more easily track their eating with the device they always have with them.

Zurich children’s health is a priority for me. I am chocolate specialist Xarah Chocolatiere of Zurich. I sell a nutritional product that kids eat like candy. My Zurich customers use XoBiotics as a healthy treat for the whole family. To order XoBiotics, call me.

3 Ways To Cut Your Kids’ Sugar Intake In EU

3 Ways To Cut Your Kids' Sugar Intake In EU

If your EU children are like mine, they love sweets. It seems like it takes a few years for children to appreciate flavors more sophisticated than Hubba Bubba and Fruity Pebbles. If my kids were in charge of the grocery list, we would eat popsicles for breakfast and gummy bears for dinner.

If you are trying to wean your kids (or yourself) off sugar, I suggest you reduce it in phases. Radical changes rarely succeed for EU children.

Here are 3 ways to reduce the sugar in your kid’s diets.

1) Drink less soda: they are loaded with sugar and empty calories.
2) Use whole grains: complex carbs provide long-term energy. Brown rice, whole wheat bread, and whole-grain pasta are all readily available at EU grocery stores.
3) Substitute natural sweeteners like stevia, honey, and 100% fruit juice. The more subtle sweetness provided by natural sweeteners helps taste buds adjust gradually to less sugar.

Xocai offers many low-glycemic healthy chocolate products that kids love. See http://www.mxicorp.com/ for more information.

Rethinking Zurich Schools

Rethinking Zurich Schools Welcome to today’s Healthy Zurich Children blog. This site is dedicated to promoting children’s health in the Zurich area.

Unless you have been living in a cave for the last 20 years, you have heard about the obesity epidemic among U.S. children.

There are many worthwhile programs in the Zurich community that promote healthy eating habits and increased exercise for our youngest residents. I came across an interesting article last week that focused on how the design of schools can affect children’s health in general and obesity rates in particular.

‘Many schools were planned without thought given to how students can safely walk or ride their bikes to school. Playgrounds have been cut from budgets. An overemphasis on competitive sports has created a disproportionate amount of funding going to a select group of high profile sports, while minimizing the opportunities for the majority of students who desperately need exercise.’ Joel K. Sims, AIA, “Designing Schools To Fight Childhood Obesity,” School Designer, May 2007, http://www.schooldesigner.com/Articles/Designing-Schools-to-Fight-Childhood-Obesity-Part-1.asp, accessed on May 16, 2011

Here are some suggestions for making schools fitness-friendly:

  • Incorporate features of professional health clubs
  • Partner with community fitness centers to create multi-use facilities
  • Combine electronic entertainment and exercise
  • Incorporate movement into lesson plans

As we plan for new and renovated Zurich schools, let’s take our children’s fitness into consideration. As Zurich parents and educators, we can also promote lesson plans that incorporate movement. I also believe we need to look at how our tax dollars are spent. Do competitive sports programs in Switzerland receive more than their fair share of available funds? Could we better use this money to provide exercise opportunities for all Zurich children?

I encourage you to raise awareness of these issues in your Switzerland city. The only thing that will spur change is if parents, educators, and government leaders work together to lower the obesity rates in our Switzerland communities.
